Is it photography or art? At the end of the day it is photography but I do rely on post processing to add colour. Rising smoke is very random and allows for some very unique shots. Some of the pictures below are the same photo with different edits.
The Setup
A: Solid black backdrop.
B: A light with cardboard blinders so the light goes forward towards the smoke without hitting the backdrop. This will allow me to see the smoke through the camera to allow me to focus.
C: The camera
D: Speed light flash. This flash will also have a blinder to block light from hitting the backdrop. This is the main flash to use for the capture.
E: The smoke source. I use a incense stick.
The capture will be black and white. The colour is added later in post.
